Amanda has a very talented friend/young woman leader that asked if she could take Amanda's senior pictures for her. I was thrilled, as I wasn't on the ball for planning this. And man did she do a great job. I love how she captured Amanda. I think that these turned out so good, and mostly because Amanda is so comfortable with Kim. It was fun to tag along and watch their magic. And I love how they incorporated her oboe into some of the pictures. Something Amanda will have forever.
Amanda really wanted to check out ASU as a possibility for college. The oboe professor there is one of the best in the country, and someone Amanda really wants to study under. Her current teacher in Grand Junction, did his masters at ASU, and highly encourged Amanda to look into it. So, she and I took a little trip to Arizona to explore the area, and look into what it would take for her to get into this studio.
While there we took a tour of the campus, stayed at a sketchy hotel, ate at some good restaurants, met Martin Shuring, said oboe professor (Amanda did a private lesson with him, which she thoroughly enjoyed), went to a student recital, walked the river front, attended a student ward, hiked in a local national forest, and visited the musem of musical instruments. It was a whirlwind of a trip, but fun to see a potential campus for Amanda to live on.
The musical instrument museum was so unique and we had a fun half day exploring. It was really cool to see the origins of all the instruments, and all the unique variations of them from over the years and across the world.
It rained most of the time we were visiting, but Sunday afternoon it cleared up, and we took advantage of it and got out of the hotel for a quick little hike.
The trail we were on doubled as a mountian bike trail and it was fun to see the terrain. It was a difficult trail and the locals told me that it changes often, given the nature of the sand and water running through it. All I could think of was how bad it would feel to land on one of the those cactus's if you took a fall.
Needless to day, Amanda loved Arizona and was sure this would be a great place to go to college. It is so wierd to think that this is where my daughter could be living in the very near future. All the logistics of getting her there and figuring out where she would live, eat, and everyhing else was overwhelming for this mom. But it was nice to see it in person and get a feel for the campus and area.
