Starting off fall right, with our annual hike and BBQ on the Mesa. It was a cold one this year, as a front was moving in this evening, but we still had fun and good food. Our group became much larger this year, as we ran into good friends who were up taking pictures, and they stayed to join us. It made for a fun, but cold, evening.
Prior ot our picnic, we took the kids on the newest trail on the Mesa, County line. This one is a great trail for kids, as the loop is only seven miles long, so it can be done in an hour or two. It was fun to see the vista from the overlook in the summer!
Maren continued to rest her foot this fall, a lot. It had been hurt over the summer while helping with a soccer camp, and while we x-rayed it, nothing showed up. So they called it a bad sprain, and put her in a boot for a few weeks. But when she went to start running for cross country, it hurt a lot from day one. So back we went to the orthopedics (they know us well, unfortunatly), and we got a repeat xray, followed by an MRI. It ends up she did have a fracture (possibly multiple) and also an accessory navicular. Which is an extra bone in the side of her foot. Likely on both feet, but we don't know for sure. The accessory navicular isn't all that troublesome on it's own, but combined with the break, she would definately need to rest it and let it heal for a while. So very frustrating for this very active young lady!!! So glad Skai is always willing to keep her company.
About midway though October, she did get permission to do some light running on it, and she was able to start the referee job she had been prepping to do. So fun, especially when she got to referee Jacob's games a couple of times.
She learned a lot, and earned some money too. This was a great fit for her.
Jacob had a great season again. He is so ready for more challenging play, and it was apparent that we really need to look into that as this season became almost boring, and easy for him. He played a lot of goalie, but his team was so good at defense, that the ball barely came to him. He scored regularly, and really focused on using his left foot more, which was fun to watch.
A friend had a birthday at a go cart track, and Jacob was in heaven!
And our last year at the outdoor expo offered to 2nd and 4th graders at his school. He loved this event. So much so that he begged to go with a friend, when I couldn't take him.
His class took a hike on the serpents trail with a park service guide. This is fun to hear the history of this trail, as it was the original road up on the monument. When it was first built cars had to drive up it in reverse, as the gas reservoir wouldn't work on such a hill otherwise.
Jacob and his buddy Aidan both were trying hard to master the 2x2 rubics cube this fall. Both finally did master it, but it was fun to watch them try. Who knew these would come back in style, and with so many variations?
Spencer had his first choir concert of the school year. He tries hard to not stand out too much, and sometimes that is hard with being one of the two boys in his age group. He has such a nice voice, i love to hear him sing.
Dave and I did a little landscaping this fall to fit in a fun hammock spot, and it has been a hit for all the kids. Spencer loves to spend time here unwinding after school.
Once in a while I get to babysit these cute twins still. And they are such a joy to have around. I love to play with them, and look forward to their visits. They too loved the hammock.
While the garden wasn't great this year, it was ok, and nice to get a few things out of it. I forgot how good fresh carrots taste. They were probably my favorite.
Amanda came home for her fall break, and I had to snap this picture of her at Jacob's game she swung by for. She had forgotten how chilly a Colorado fall morning can be, and was glad we had a spare blanket or two.
Among the fun activities while she was home was family pictures! She was very helpful putting outfits together for me. Never my favorite job, so it was nice to have some help deciding.
We got a few visitors the next week. It was fun to play with Doug and Heather and the kids. The highlights included bike shopping with Heather, hiking to Devils kitchen, and back yard leaf pile fun. (Notice Ryan's duct tape shoes! Maren was ready to improvise when we couldn't find his shoes in a timely manner.)
Doug and I also fit in a bike ride one morning. Fall mornings are the best!
It also happened that Dusty came into town the same weekend, so Doug got to ride with us ladies. I sure have missed Dusty, and am so glad she is back to living on the west coast, so we can see her more.
Fall came to an ubrupt halt early this year with a snowfall on Oct 29th. It was so crazy. The kids loved it though, and made the most of it making snow mounds on the trampoline.
And because with the snow came some pretty frigid tempertures, trick r treating was pretty much a bust this year. Jacob lasted the longest, and wore lots of warm layers to wear under his costume.
Maren and Spencer had fun, but decided early on that it was not worth it to freeze for a little bit of candy. They might have been a little jealous staring at his pile later that night though. Towards the end of the night people were just dumping their loot into Jacobs bag, as so few trick r treaters had come around.
Sadly, that is the best costume picture I got. Maren was a pink ninja. Jacob a scary something or other, that I wouldn't allow him to wear the mask. And Spencer wore a moose T-shirt for his costume. Lame. But really no one cared, because they were all so bundled up, no one could see costumes anyway.
