Great Expectations

Amanda and Maren both took dance classes this year, Amanda ballet, and Maren tap. They both did very well, and loved it, mostly. It has been a love hate relationship, as Amanda's school schedule is demanding (time consuming and strict, not necessarily academically challenging unfortumately), and thus leaves little play time. So any extra curricular activities are hard to commit to. Her dance was to a song from Mulan and the costume was very fitting.
The tap class Maren was in was too difficult for her, but we didn't know that going in, and by the time we figured it out costumes had been ordered and we were committed. She actually did very well in the end, due to a persistent and loving teacher (who also happens to be her primary president) and a good attitude that only Maren could have pulled off. Her dance was to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and it was adorable.
So this week was the BIG recital, they had 4 rehearsals each,(seriously folks they are only kids), including one 4 hour dress rehearsal (and we left early). The big performance was last night, which did end up being very well put together. They both did great with their dances, and we were glad when the night was over, no more dance!
I have to say this whole year of us living here has caused me to think a bit about what my expectations are for the kids. Especially my oldest. With so much pressure coming from outside sources, I have become more protective over their childhood. I love to watch my kids be kids, and enjoy those pleasures while they can. But at the same time realizing they do need opportunities to learn and grow. Such a balancing act sometimes. (So I guess it shouldn't surprise me when I found my first grey hair this week, actually three of them.)

Spencer has officially started the terrible two's, three major tantrums this week, but he is still cute. The new little people toys have been a big hit around here, as well as the kiddie trampoline.

It has been great to unload lots of raw energy!

I set up the bassinet and things in my room this week. And Maren, while admiring the baby toys (mobile), told me the baby should want to come out now so he could play with "him's toys". I told her that he is not quite ready yet, to which she responded he must have a "toy in yours tummy". (Yup and the toy is my ribs). Week 34, and he is feeling like one big kid.

I'm glad your girls had such a good attitude about their dance class. I love the tantrums...they make you feel like such a great mother! Good luck

Wow, what a huge commitment dance turned out to be. I've avoided it, but secretly hoped Bethany would have the opportunity, and now she's asking for ballet. We'll see. She already does so much, and we'll add piano this next year, too. Crazy long hours of rehearsal, though! Sheesh. OH, your poor ribs! How is your back holding up?
