Catching up on Spring

April and May always seem like  a whirl wind of activity around here, with spring sports in full spring, school wrapping up, crazy spring weather and garden and yard work.  But I love it!  I  love spending time with my kids on school field trips, and seeing them in their music performances and awards assembly's.  And I love looking at how far they progressed through the school year when I visit with their teachers at PTC.  I also love rainy spring or freak snowy days and watching my garden and yard come alive after a long cold winter.
This April storm dumped 6 inches on us and the boys jumped at the chance to  make a snowman.  Most of the time the winter snow we get is too dry to make a snowman, like sand almost, so we make snow blobs instead.  But these wet spring storms are perfect.
And because I am slightly OCD about my garden I had covered both my strawberry patch (which was in full bloom when the storm came in) and my garden seedlings from the cold by spreading bed sheets over them.  I am sure my neighbors thought me to be slightly nuts, but hey it paid off.  We have had a huge amount of berries, and I started harvesting lettuce and spinach last week!
For a little spring getaway, Dave joined me for a spring bike festival in Green river put on the by the same bike club that I had gone to the fall festival with last September.  It was great.  We biked a trail down the San Rafael Swell called black dragon that had absolutely amazing scenery, and a few other small ones, including this one along the green river.  It was a great quick trip.  Especially nice to spend a few days without kids and just he and I just to catch up on life.  and take a mental break from all the activity at home.
My mom was kind enough to come and stay with the kids while we were away.  She always does such an amazing job playing with them.  Seriously this woman gets kids, I love to learn from her.  So grateful she is my mom!

We took one afternoon and took a little hike on the monument.  Seriously beautiful!  Hard to believe this place is in my back yard. Spencer and Jacob loved this little cave they found...

My other favorite thing about my mom is cooking with her.  She is a great cook, and very patient with my not so natural skills.  We made apricot jam, with some apricots I got from bountiful baskets, and we tried a fun concoction of roasted veggies, including fava beans a new veggie for all of us.  I had been exploring this book called "healthy bread in five minutes a day" and having her here gave me the confidence to try it.  This first loaf turned out yummy, although not perfect, but tonight's try was awesome...yum!

She was also here to get me through the last week of school craziness, which was so great.  Sometimes I think this time of year is even worse schedule wise than the holidays.  But it is all good, as it helps me appreciate the quiet lazy days of summer that much more.
