We did something a little different this year for fall break. And it was funny to hear the kids reactions..."you mean we are not going camping, like we always do?" I think they had a good time.
We ventured to Denver to explore the city. Dave went to a medical conference, and the kids and I explored.
First stop was the Botanical gardens. My favorite. And you can tell from the lack of pictures that I was enjoying myself.
I did get these pictures, and I guess the kids did have fun as well. Actually they liked it more than I thought. But their feet were definitely tired by the end of the day.
Next stop the Aquarium...which was awesome! Especially since there was way less walking and the kids feet were far less tired. And Dave was able to join us, which is always awesome.
Day two we spent at the ZOO! My kids loved this day. And it was fun for me as well. It was such a different experience to go to the zoo with older kids, no strollers, no nap times, minimal whining. We were able to cover the entire zoo in one day and see a lot of shows and feeding along the way. The kids were engaged the entire time. They loved taking pictures of the animals and reading the signs.
I had kept the Lego creation exhibits a secret until we got there, and this boys face says it all. He was in Lego heaven looking for the next creation on the map. We did find all of them. And we managed to stay at the zoo until closing, which is a feat considering we got there shortly after opening. I was the one who was tired after this day. Dave and I were planning to go explore downtown this evening without the kids, and I fell asleep on the couch instead.
The Lego creations really were incredible!
Brought back a lot of memories of zoo trips with the kids, that is for sure.
Day three we ventured to the Science Museum. Another fun day full of space exploration, mummies, gems, dinosaurs, dodging school groups, and this fun kids area my kids would have stayed in all day if I had let them.
They played with these blocks for hours, and hours.
Amanda ended up making this tower as tall as she was, the rest of us went and found some lunch...
We also were able to go the Denver Art museum for an evening with Dave and the other medical conference people. It was nice to see artwork from some of the artists I have been teaching about in Art Heritage at the kids school. But the kids petered out quite quickly this night, and we ended up in a lobby area with a few kids activities while Dave and Amanda looked around more.
The hotel we stayed at was in a great location, and enabled us to get around easily, Dave biked to his conference everyday and we would pick him up for dinner and evening activities.
Saturday morning, our last day, we packed up our room while listening to general conference, visited red rocks amphitheater, then finished listening as we drove home as best as we could. Dave even dropped me off at the top of Glenwood Canyon for a bike ride through the fall leaves. It was spectacular and so great to get a little alone time after being with the kids 24/7 for the past 4 days.
And in the end we did not disappoint, as we decided to take a quick camping trip the next week to Moab, just for fun.
We camped along the Colorado river at a BLM site and enjoyed a few days of biking, hiking, and exploring along the river. We hiked Negro Bill canyon, which was so great.

Maren took a fall on our last day of the trip on a little mountain bike ride we took the family on. This ride ended up being much harder than what the trail guide said, but the kids were troopers and did great. This section of slick rock was definitely the highlight of the ride, if only we didn't have to slog though all the deep sand and poorly marked trails before this. Maren ended up with a fractured wrist, and and awesome cast for the next four weeks. While on the trail Dave made this awesome splint using twigs, duct tape, and medical gauze. It was a long drive back to Grand Junction for this cutie!
